How Sinergia Animal Is Maximizing Impact By Fighting For Sorely Overlooked Animals
Founded in 2017, Sinergia Animal is proudly "born and raised" in the Global South. Currently, the organization is working across nine countries in Latin America and Southeast Asia to improve farmed animal welfare and promote plant-based food systems.
The method
Sinergia Animal uses different complementary tactics to raise awareness of animal suffering in factory farms, systematically free hens from cages, and expand access to animal-free products. Some examples:
-
Corporate Commitments: By getting large companies and restaurant chains to commit to decreasing their procurement of animal products by 20% or using only cage-free eggs, Sinergia is shifting norms of consumption and decreasing suffering.
-
Demonstrations & Advertising: Sinergia brings animal suffering into the public eye through strategic street activism and use of billboards to confront lawmakers and companies failing to uphold their commitments.
-
Investigations & Public Policy: After conducting undercover investigations exposing the severe welfare violations of animal farming operations, Sinergia uses the footage as evidence to push policy for better animal welfare.
Through its multi-dimensional approach and success, it has been a recommended charity by Animal Charity Evaluators, who estimate that for every dollar donated, 53 animals are helped.
The focus
Sinergia works on improving animal welfare in South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile) and Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia). Their investigations and advocacy efforts strengthen regional movements for lasting food system change. As the Animal Welfare and Research Director at Sinergia Animal, Dr. Fernanda Vieira, explains:
“Transforming our food systems is not optional, it's essential. Without confronting the impacts of industrial animal farming, meaningful progress on climate, health, and sustainability will remain out of reach.”
The impact
From institutional diet change commitments that will potentially serve 2.6 million plant-based meals per year, to achieving 171 cage-free commitments from large franchise companies like Burger King, Sinergia is making a mark and improving animal welfare through various channels. By creating and iterating evidence-based programs tailored to national contexts, Sinergia is filling a gap in global animal advocacy.
